Hedgehogs
My daughter is very creative. I imagine you all find that very surprising. After all, her parents aren’t creative at all…
Grandma Dee gave us a lot of DVDs of children’s shows, and Moira loves them. She has found a British show called ‘Kipper the Dog.’ It is a very low-key, soothing show. Everyone is very calm and speaks slowly and lightly. It’s a great ‘wind down’ DVD.
One of the episodes that we have is called ‘Hedgehog Watch’ in which Kipper and his friend Tiger (who is a Scottish terrier) stay up late trying to get a picture of a hedgehog. They accidently let one into the house, and then it leaves after eating Kipper’s donut and sleeping in his bed. It’s a cute little story.
Two weekends ago, we went to Kath’s folks house, and the moment we got there, Moira burst out with “I’m looking for hedgehogs.” She proceeded to spend the entire afternoon racing around ‘finding’ hedgehogs. We found them under Grandma Jean’s bed and on Jean’s bed. Moira and I even took a ‘nap’ with the hedgehogs. Jean convinced Moira that there were surely hedgehogs under Grandpa Bill’s bed, too. We had a lot of fun with those hedgehogs.
As we were pulling away from the grandparent’s house, Kath looked over at Moira and said, “Are the hedgehogs coming home with us?”
Moira stopped thought seriously for a moment, and then said, “No, they’re staying with Grandma and Grandpa.”
We nodded sagely, and continued down the alley when Moira piped up in this wistful voice, “Bye, hedgehogs,” at which point Kath and I started laughing hysterically.
We called Jean and Bill to let them know that they were responsible for the hedgehogs now. Jean was sure they wouldn’t be any problem.
Another fun little thing we’re doing – we’ve told all of Kath’s siblings about the hedgehog, and they are going to go buy some stuffed hedgehogs and leave them at Bill and Jean’s when they go to visit.
